5 Tips for Preparing Your Home for a Painter

There is nothing better than freshening up the walls of your home with brand new paint. But this project does not come without its hassles. There will be things that you have to do as the homeowner to make sure your home is ready for the painter.

We have put together our top five tips for getting your home ready for a painter. Some of these things will require some time and labor on your part.

1. Remove Wall Hangings

This is something that you will need to do. Especially if you want to make sure they are handled with care. While painters do try their best to be careful, they don’t make any guarantees. Typically a painting company will specifically mention that this needs to be done.

Even if they don’t, make sure you do it anyway. Store them in a place that is out of the way of the painter. While you are doing this also make sure that any cords or wires are out of the way.

2. Move Furniture

Depending on how much furniture you have to move you may need to do this a little bit at a time over the course of a week or so. We don’t recommend leaving this until the morning the painting crew will arrive.

If you don’t have anywhere to put the larger pieces of furniture then move them into the middle of the room and cover them.  However, it is better to move them out completely if possible.

3. Provide a Place for the Crew and Supplies

When the crew comes they will have at least two people and all of the supplies. How many people and how much supplies will depend on the size of your job.  No matter the size or how many painter and supplies you will need to have a place set aside for them.

This space should be cleared as much as possible as well. It should also be close to the area to be painted.

4. Discuss Wall Preparations with your Painter

Every painting company is different so you will need to ask your particular company how they want the walls prepared. Some painters do all of the prep work themselves.  Some things you might be asked to do is remove nails and fill in the holes, wipe down the walls, or tape off.

It would be unusual for a painter to ask a homeowner to tape off areas, but if you are trying to save money on the labor they may ask you to do this yourself.

5. Remove Curtains and Rugs

The last tip is something that gets overlooked sometimes. Homeowners tend to forget to remove curtains and blinds especially.

Like we said before, a professional painting company will have painters who are skilled and careful in removing a client’s personal items, but removing these ahead of time can provide you with the peace of mind to avoid any potential accidents or damages.
